[ Rey would find a big rectangular box that is addressed to her with an envelope attached on the front of it. ]
[ If she opens the letter first it reads:
Rey,
I'm sorry for my actions. I'm sorry for not facing you in person or contacting you through the amulet. But I felt that this would be a bit better for now. I'm sorry for not telling you where the saber is or even what I had done.
You came to me saying that it was Finn's. I decided to send you something of his because I don't need items to hold onto to remember them by. I have memories. These items may not be what you really wanted but I feel that you need them more than I do.
One of them is his pillow.
The other is his jacket.
I figured you could hug the pillow and keep the jacket wrapped around you or whatever you chose to do with them. They both still have his scent and maybe it might ease something for you.
I hope you can one day forgive me for my actions.
Poe Dameron ]
[ Once she opens the box, she will encounter the jacket first before the pillow he used. ]
[Not barging in is a wise choice, considering all the various traps and locks Rey has on her bedroom door. Sure, it's a little paranoid, but old habits die hard. And in case Qui-Gon needed any evidence of his good decision, the sound of several latches and a few other mechanical devices being undone may suffice, before Rey opens the door and peers at him with the usual moderate amount of suspicion.]
[The suspicion, as always, does nothing to ruffle Qui-Gon's proverbial feathers. Instead, he stands there, arms crossed and shoulders relaxed, as he catches Rey's eye.]
A proposition.
[Wait. That alone is pretty suspicious. Best to clarify it isn't something crazy like gambling in some underground casino or taking part in some illegal trading as part of a mission. Not that Qui-Gon Jinn, exemplary Jedi Master, has any experience in either.]
[It is pretty suspicious, as proven by Rey narrowing her eyes at him just a bit more at his first answer. And they don't get un-narrowed more at his second, either.]
A job.
[Really, at this point a suggestion of gambling or illegal trading would be welcome. At least it would be specific and not vague or mysterious. Rey doesn't know what you're selling, Qui-Gon, but she ain't buying.]
What kind of job.
[IT WILL PROBABLY HAVE BREAD. AND SOMETHING BETWEEN THE BREAD.]
[At this point, it's practically tradition for Rey's skepticism and Qui-Gon's good-natured (if not poorly-positioned) intent to clash. It's like a game.]
The kind that involves both of us getting paid for examining a basement and a meal.
[Best way to get Rey's attention: talk about free food. It never fails. But it still sounds way too good to be true, and Qui-Gon has an awful lot of room in those robe sleeves to hide things.]
[Alright, well... not exactly what Rey was expecting. And in fact she looks a bit unsure of how to react for a moment.
She's still pretty sure somebody is getting scammed, judging by how shifty Qui-Gon is being about this. She's just not certain if that somebody is her, or if it's the owner of the house. She has Questions. So, first things first, she furrows her brow heavily at him and asks the most telling question of all.]
So do you believe it's haunted? [Oh right also gonna just circumvent this nonsense before it comes.] And don't tell me you believe they believe it. Yes or no.
[The reply is immediate, though accompanied by some confusion and concern. Sure, they don't talk like they used to, but Rey's still certain it's temporary. She has so many more memories than he does from when he was here before, so it makes sense that Finn would be more distant than before. He just needs time. And Rey is nothing if not patient, possibly to a fault.]
Yeah. Of course, yeah. [Is something wrong? Some worry starts to creep in through her side of the connection.] Where do you want to meet?
/o/ oh, how did you wanna call the end of the dream dust thread? no injuries for finn?
[There in lies Finn's issue, it's becoming slowly something more permanent and he doesn't like it. Especially when Kylo Ren ends up going to him for advice on stuff concerning Rey and Finn has no idea how she's doing.
So consider this him attempting to find their friendship again.] How about the Steambucks closest to the airyard?
that's what i was thinking, yeah! sorry, i moved last month and lost track of some things
Yeah, that works with me. [He'll give her the name of the place and start heading that way himself.
Rey will find him sitting at one of the tables on the furthest tables, it's out of the way and quiet. But he's also got a waitress there just talking to her while waiting for Rey.]
The ping from Kylo Ren across the amulets comes fairly early in the morning, but he honestly has little idea when Rey might be awake. Hopefully it's the right time, but either way he thinks she'll be fine with it, in the end.
Rey doesn't sleep much in general, preferring to nap a few times rather than dedicate a longer amount of time to sleeping, so she's awake when she hears Kylo's voice through the amulets.
Good. So she was awake after all. Perhaps it meant all of this would go well... though he's careful not to set his expectations too high.
I'll be waiting, comes his simple response.
Whenever Rey heads to the park, she'll find Ren waiting at one of the picnic tables scattered around, wearing his typical sort of Verens garb and with a couple of boxes set in front of him, hands folded as he stares out across the grass and trees. He's certainly grateful for his reputation, because it means that for the most part the natives give him a wide berth—and as a result, a fair amount of privacy.
So far, Rey's only complaint is that he's picked a meeting place outside. She still isn't fond of the cold, and she's bundled up in at least a few layers when she arrives, though he may be pleased to note that some of the warm clothing he bought her last winter is included in the ensemble.
She slides into a free seat, this time the one across from him she's learned her lesson! and glances at the boxes before giving him a quizzical look.
Although he is pleased with that fact, her ensemble does leave... a bit to be desired. Still, it's probably about as good as it's going to get, if this is what she's settled on after this long in Verens.
Ah well.
"I thought it would be better to have something a bit late than wait almost another year," he says, pushing the wider, flatter box towards her across the table. It's unwrapped with only a ribbon holding it closed, so there isn't much between Rey and the tan-colored robe inside. It's made of a light but sturdy fabric that shimmers almost gold, but he's made sure that it's practical enough for everyday use, as it has a few pockets on the inside.
"And apparently there's something about giving gifts this month, so it seemed appropriate."
An expression of surprise and confusion crosses Rey's face as she looks first at Kylo and then at the box he scoots across the table toward her. It takes a moment before she realizes what it is, but when she does her face splits into a delighted smile.
"Is this—did you get me a birthday present?"
She doesn't even open the box for a second or two, just holds it gently in her gloved hands like the very idea of receiving a gift tied with a ribbon is exciting. Which is it. But she realizes the wrapping is probably not usually the most thrilling part of all this, so finally she does nimbly untie the ribbon and open the box. Almost immediately upon revealing the robe inside, the sunlight brightens around her to the point where the shiny bits of fabric are impossible to miss, and Rey wastes no time ripping off her gloves and pulling the garment gingerly out of the box to admire it.
She does unfortunately forget to verbally respond, but the sparkling fabric will hopefully speak for itself regarding her feelings about it.
Even if they weren't on emotion planet, it would have been easy to tell just how pleased she was with the gift, and it brings a warmth to the air around them as a few green plants emerge under the table.
"It's not subtle, but it's practical enough for everyday things," he replies, cursing himself internally for not thinking about if Rey would want attention. Even so, he's not terribly annoyed about his lack of forethought, since he doesn't think people should be ignoring Rey anyway. And she seems to like it, which is the most important thing.
"It's beautiful," she says breathlessly. "Much too beautiful for every day."
She doesn't seem like she's complaining, at least, since she's certainly still smiling. He's right about it not being subtle, though. Scavengers don't wear soft, lovely clothes that shine brilliantly in the sunlight. It's nice to pretend every so often, though. She finally pulls her eyes away from the robe and back to Kylo's face to grin at him almost a bit slyly.
"I'm not sure you'd know what practical really means. But thank you, Kylo. Really."
[Rey will receive a handwritten note ("This entitles you to one sandwich from a restaurant on me. - Finn") and a small box containing this necklace. Not practical but it reminded him of her.]
Package with a note

[ACTION WITH PROMISE OF SANDWICHES]
Rey, it's Qui-Gon.
Do you have a moment?
[SANDWICHES??]
A moment for what?
[MAYBE]
A proposition.
[Wait. That alone is pretty suspicious. Best to clarify it isn't something crazy like gambling in some underground casino or taking part in some illegal trading as part of a mission. Not that Qui-Gon Jinn, exemplary Jedi Master, has any experience in either.]
For a job. One that I can't do alone.
[TELL ME MORE]
The kind that involves both of us getting paid for examining a basement and a meal.
My treat.
[I'M LISTENING]
Why would we get paid for examining a basement?
[WHAT ARE YOU UP TO, OLD MAN.]
[THE BREAD WILL BE 80% NOT STALE]
The person offering the contract believes it to be haunted.
[He says matter-of-factly.]
[WHAT WILL THE OTHER 20% BE]
She's still pretty sure somebody is getting scammed, judging by how shifty Qui-Gon is being about this. She's just not certain if that somebody is her, or if it's the owner of the house. [ONLY A LITTLE BIT STALE]
[WAIT IS THE REMAINING 20% A LITTLE BIT STALE OR IS THE WHOLE THING A LITTLE BIT (AKA 20%) STALE]
[YES]
[WELL THEN HOW CAN I REFUSE??]
[YOU CAN'T]
[DAMN IT]
(no subject)
possibly earlier this month??
Hey, Rey? You got time to talk? Over a cup of coffee or something?
wonderful!
Yeah. Of course, yeah. [Is something wrong? Some worry starts to creep in through her side of the connection.] Where do you want to meet?
